Phanomsinh Mickey Koulabdara
Advocacy Ambassador

“As I delve deeper into the demining efforts across Southeast Asia, I also unearth the legacies of my own family’s past. Learning about my father’s involvement in the war and his dedication to protecting us mirrors the mission of Legacies of War: safeguarding future generations from the scars of the past. As an Advocacy Ambassador, I am deeply grateful for the purpose and fulfillment it brings me. Even the smallest contributions hold the potential for a profound impact, not just for future ambassadors, but for the people, the land, and the culture that we strive to protect.”
My Story
Phanomsinh Mickey Koulabdara was born in Pakse, Laos, a place that forms the core of his connection to the mission of Legacies of War. From the very beginning, Mickey’s journey was intertwined with the region’s history; their mother, while pregnant, traveled to Cambodia, inspiring the name Phanomsinh, after Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia.
This deep rooted heritage fuels Mickey’s passion for advocacy. As an Advocacy Ambassador for Legacies of War, Mickey is driven by a profound sense of purpose. In 2023, Mickey attended the International Mine Awareness Day at the United Nations in New York City, connecting with passionate leaders and advocates, deepening their dedication to the cause. In 2024, Mickey embarked on a transformative trip to Laos and Vietnam with Legacies of War, engaging with board members, leadership, and NGOs like MAG (Mine Advisory Group) and PeaceTrees Vietnam. This hands on experience allowed Mickey to learn and grow, truly becoming “boots on the ground” in the effort to address unexploded ordnance and promote healing.
Utilizing a Bachelor’s degree of Science in Human Ecology from THE Ohio State University, Mickey actively educates their community through events like the annual Asian Festival in Columbus, Ohio. By engaging with local community members, Mickey provides valuable resources and educates them about the history and impact of the American Secret War, fostering greater awareness and action.
